The Mineshaft, formed on October 1976, was an exclusive, members-only club that targeted homosexual participants with an interest in BDSM and alternative kinks. Those who obliged to the Mineshaft’s dress code policies were granted membership into this sex club (“gay bar”), where pure, limitless sex happened behind closed doors. For nine years, the Mineshaft reigned as the “big daddy” of all gay sex clubs in New York. Their establishment, however, had to close its doors on November 1985 in response to the heightened fear of the AIDS epidemic. Even though their title was lost to other clubs that had sprung up in their place, their name still makes an important mark in history today. The Mineshaft was, after all, the place that provided a space for the gay community to thrive.
